Murdok field guide
What is a spatial deduction mystery game?
A spatial deduction mystery is a logic puzzle in which positions are evidence. You read statements about rooms, objects, rows, columns, and relationships, then reconstruct the only scene that satisfies them all.
The short answer
Instead of guessing a culprit from personality or motive, you prove where every person could stand. In Murdok, the completed layout reveals who was alone in the same room as the victim.
What do you actually deduce?
Each witness gives a rule that changes the possible layout. A person may belong in a named room, stand north of an object, share a row with something, or be next to another person. Every person occupies one usable cell, with no repeated row or column.
How is this different from a usual whodunit?
A traditional mystery may ask you to judge stories, motives, or hidden information. A spatial deduction puzzle puts the decisive evidence on a visible map. The solution must satisfy the same public constraints for every player; the answer is not selected by an AI conversation or a random guess.
A small example
Imagine a map with several rooms, a desk, and three witnesses. The clues might say:
- Mara stood north of the desk.
- Ivo was not in the archive.
- Ren stood next to Mara.
Can you play without learning special notation?
Yes. Start by placing people with direct room or object clues, mark impossible cells, then use relationship clues once the board has fewer options. Murdok lets you drag portraits, keep candidate notes, apply hints, or print the case and solve it on paper.
How does Murdok check a case?
Before release, the public clues are translated into executable constraints and the possible layouts are enumerated. A case is rejected if it has no solution or more than one. The murderer is derived only after the unique scene has been established.
